HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Kirkland Owner’s Guide

HeatShield chimney cap installation in Kirkland typically runs $340-$620 for most single-flue residential setups, including the cap, collar, sealant, and labor. We stock HeatShield-compatible caps and collars on our Kirkland trucks, and most replacements are completed in under two hours once the written price is approved. Homeowners usually discover the problem after a windstorm off Lake Washington loosens the cap, or when water spots appear on the firebox ceiling during our fall inspection rush.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield caps are not universal across the product line. The Resurfacing System (the cerfractory flue liner coating) and the Joint Repair System use different collar geometries, and the cap must mate to the existing top-seal or crown wash without leaving a gap that traps condensation.

To identify your part, look for the stamped model letter on the underside of the existing cap flange: R-series for Resurfacing, J-series for Joint Repair. If the stamp is rusted over, measure the flue tile inner diameter at the top course. R-series caps fit 6″, 7″, 8″, and 10″ round flues; J-series adds a 6″×10″ oval for factory-built chimney transitions common in Kirkland’s 1980s-1990s split-levels near Finn Hill. The OEM HeatShield cap uses a 304 stainless body with a welded collar and a 5/8″ drip edge. Aftermarket equivalents from Gelco match the spec but ship with a slightly thinner 22-gauge mesh; we source through Haven’s buying network and will show you both options with the price difference printed on the estimate. Level Two Chimney Kirkland is an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Water staining on the firebox ceiling or smoke chamber walls. The cap collar sealant has cracked or the drip edge is pitched wrong, letting Kirkland’s driving winter rains run down the flue. We see this most often on south-facing caps where freeze-thaw cycles open gaps in the butyl seal by February.
  • Rust flakes or orange staining on the hearth. The 304 stainless mesh or collar is failing at the weld points, usually where salt air from Puget Sound has accelerated pitting. HeatShield caps are not marine-grade 316; they last 12-18 years here, not the 25 you might expect inland.
  • Cap is visibly tilted, shifted, or missing after wind. The mounting brackets have corroded through or the masonry anchors pulled out of a deteriorating crown. A cap sitting crooked channels water into the gap instead of away from it.
  • Birds or squirrels nesting in the flue. The mesh has been bent, torn, or removed by a previous owner. HeatShield mesh is 5/8″ square, which stops starlings but not determined raccoons; if you’re hearing scratching in March, the cap is compromised or the wrong spec was installed.
  • Downdraft smoke or cold-air drop even with the damper closed. The cap’s internal baffle is damaged or the wrong model was fitted to a fireplace with a negative-pressure issue. In Kirkland’s hillside homes near Bridle Trails, wind patterns across the roofline make baffle design matter more than most owners realize.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range (Kirkland)
HeatShield-compatible cap (OEM or Gelco equivalent) $180-$340
Collar, sealant, and hardware kit $45-$85
Labor: removal, fit, seal, and documentation $115-$195
Total installed $340-$620

The range depends on three things: whether we can reuse the existing anchor points, whether the crown wash needs patching before the new collar seals, and whether your roof pitch requires our ladder-assist setup (steep composite roofs in the Highlands area add roughly 20 minutes). Every estimate is written before work starts, Clause 1 of the Haven Standard. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation and seal integrity. We also stock DuraFlex and Gelco alternatives if your flue configuration has been modified since the original HeatShield work.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check whether the cap is loose by sight from the ground or a window; do not climb the roof. If the cap shifts when you push it with a long pole from a secured ladder, the anchors are failing. What you cannot safely assess is the collar-to-flue seal or the crown condition beneath the flange. That requires removing the cap, and the fasteners are often seized or the crown crumbles under pressure. We’ve had Kirkland homeowners call us after a DIY removal opened a crack that let water straight into the flue liner for three weeks before they noticed. Corrine Halstead’s crew carries the right extraction tools and replacement anchors; we photograph the crown before we touch anything, so you see what we saw. The camera doesn’t lie, and neither does the invoice. Call (425) 642-3485 and we’ll put a written price in your hand before anyone goes up.
