Which Gelco Models This Applies To

The pre-fab units carry a stamped model number on the underside of the lid - usually GSC-8×8, GSC-8×12, or similar - while the stainless series uses GS- prefixes. Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Gelco’s 8×8 label refers to the flue tile opening, not the outside dimension. Measure the flue tile itself. We’ve found pre-fab caps labeled 8×8 that were actually built for 7.5-inch tiles, and a cap that sits loose by even a quarter inch will lift in a Kirkland east-wind event.

• Lid is missing, tilted, or rattling in wind. The spot-welded seams on pre-fab Gelco lids fatigue at the corners, especially where salt air from Puget Sound accelerates corrosion on west-facing chimneys. Once the weld cracks, the lid becomes a sail.
• Water on the firebox floor or rust stains down the damper. A cap that no longer sits flat lets rain run straight down the flue. In Kirkland’s Juanita Beach and Houghton neighborhoods, we see this most on chimneys where the original Gelco cap was never properly counter-flashed.
• Birds or squirrels in the flue. Gelco mesh sides can separate from the frame where the spot welds fail, or the mesh itself corrodes through at the base. A gap as small as two inches is an invitation.
• Soot or creosote washing down the exterior brick below the cap. This means the cap’s overhang is compromised or the lid is no longer shedding water outward. The staining pattern usually points to which corner has lifted.
• Mounting brackets pulling away from the flue tile. Expansion and contraction from Kirkland’s freeze-thaw cycles loosen the original Tapcon or masonry screws. We replace these with stainless wedge anchors rated for the thermal cycling.
