• Smoke back-drafting into the room. The damper plate no longer seats flush against the frame, usually because heat warping or rust pitting has destroyed the seal. In Kirkland’s wet winters, we see this accelerated by condensation cycling through the flue when the damper is left cracked open.

• Cold air falling down the flue even when “closed.” The plate is warped, the frame has sagged, or debris is preventing full closure.
