To identify your part, look for the stamped model letter on the underside of the existing cap flange: R-series for Resurfacing, J-series for Joint Repair. If the stamp is rusted over, measure the flue tile inner diameter at the top course. R-series caps fit 6″, 7″, 8″, and 10″ round flues; J-series adds a 6″×10″ oval for factory-built chimney transitions common in Kirkland’s 1980s-1990s split-levels near Finn Hill. • Water staining on the firebox ceiling or smoke chamber walls. The cap collar sealant has cracked or the drip edge is pitched wrong, letting Kirkland’s driving winter rains run down the flue. We see this most often on south-facing caps where freeze-thaw cycles open gaps in the butyl seal by February.
• Rust flakes or orange staining on the hearth. The 304 stainless mesh or collar is failing at the weld points, usually where salt air from Puget Sound has accelerated pitting. HeatShield caps are not marine-grade 316; they last 12-18 years here, not the 25 you might expect inland.
• Cap is visibly tilted, shifted, or missing after wind. The mounting brackets have corroded through or the masonry anchors pulled out of a deteriorating crown. A cap sitting crooked channels water into the gap instead of away from it.
• Birds or squirrels nesting in the flue. The mesh has been bent, torn, or removed by a previous owner. HeatShield mesh is 5/8″ square, which stops starlings but not determined raccoons; if you’re hearing scratching in March, the cap is compromised or the wrong spec was installed.
• Downdraft smoke or cold-air drop even with the damper closed. The cap’s internal baffle is damaged or the wrong model was fitted to a fireplace with a negative-pressure issue.
